March 2013 – December 2013
I’m fascinated by the changing world of journalism at the moment and how social media is reinventing the industry. I ended up in Insight (then DERI) and this project via a roundabout route. After starting out as computer scientist I had spells in finance as currency trader, working in the energy market before turning to journalism and now back to a the digital world in Insight. I’ve written for DigitalTimes.ie and the Irish Independent and my Master’s thesis studied the effect of social media on coverage of the Irish general election. It’s an exciting time to be a journalist, if a little bit scary, but I’m looking forward to help the industry adapt to the social media news world with this project.
Apart from this work my two big passions are sport and travel. I’ve travelled extensively around Europe, Africa, Australasia and the Americas. I like cycling down mountains in the snow and mud and doing a bit of triathlon and football, when my dodgy knees allow. These days however following a recent arrival you’re more likely to find me enjoying the extreme sports of nappy changing or nursery rhyme singing.
